SAMA YOGA CENTER – CONNECTION. TRADITION. MASTERY
Sama is a Sanskrit word and translates into ‘equal’ – and Sama’s founder, Rebekah Jacobs, runs this beautiful yoga studio with the core idea of equality in mind. The results are a wonderfully diverse community (no easy feat given the fact that the studio is located in the upscale area of New Canaan, CT).
Sama Yoga Center is easily the most beautiful space I have personally had the joy to practice in (and I have been practicing in many lovely spaces around the globe) and getting to capture this space and its people is true highlight for me. Connection, tradition, and mastery – Sama’s core tenets – are felt in every class: from the moment you enter, there is a warm and quiet invitation to connect to yourself, and once you are seated on your mat, you are being introduced to your mat neighbor (in case you don’t know each other). Treasured traditions of the practice, such as sun salutations, are implemented in every class, and the idea of mastery is not as much focused on the pose as it is on the mind, self, and body as a whole.
If you live anywhere in the greater NY area, pay this beautiful space a visit, a weekend class can feel like a mini vacation (and Elm Street, a picturesque little shopping street with nice cafés, is in walking distance). And if you don’t, check them out anyway, they have online live classes and online yoga teacher trainings too!
